Since I realized many of you probably didn't hear about [livejournal.com profile] help_syria, here's my signal boost: it's a fandom auction community for the UN’s appeal for Syria. To put it simply, writers, vidders, artists offer their works, and all money from bids goes to the UN to help Syria in these tragic times.

Similar communities in the past were very successful, and it's easy to see why: you make a donation to help, and get a wonderful gift in return. Win/win. ^^

Bidding starts on 28th June, so get those wallets ready. And if you'd like to make an offer, you're still on time! \o/

(and look! I finally have an icon for my favourite Disney character ever!)

Starting with the ebook, there's a great site called Project Gutenberg where you can download hundreds of classic novels, completely free (also legal, which doesn't hurt).

Then, the book. I'm currently reading North & South (by the way, I found the soundtrack of the tv series online, if anyone is interested just tell me and I'll give you a link), Toothiana, Queen of the Fairy Armies (the third Guardians book by William Joyce) and The Hobbit, because I'm physically incapable of reading one book at a time. No wonder sometimes I get the storylines confused. :D Anyway, for this meme I thought it would be nice to post pictures of my first The Hobbit copy. My parents gave it to me when I was six, and my sister and I read it so many times we knew it backwards. It still has notes in my sister's handwriting, and a portrait of Smaug by yours truly in pencil.

Bonus picture, my Tolkien shelf! All the books I own, both in Italian and in English, the artbooks, the soundtracks and the movies. I'm quite proud of this one. ;)

Then, the fanfic! It was so easy to choose, the first place goes to Of Ghosts And Men, by the amazing [livejournal.com profile] stardust_made.

It's a serious crossover between Sherlock and Supernatural, although you don't have to know both to appreciate it. It's wonderful, realistic, and believable, with perfect voices and characterizations. The writing is, in a word, beautiful. Think good wine, jazz music on vynil and a sunny afternoon all rolled into one, that's how beautiful it is. Quite frankly, I would read a ten-page-long shopping list if it were written by her. Except in this case it's a fascinating story that will leave you asking for more at every new chapter.

And let me also add, it's an epic, and as any fan of The Fall will tell you, Epics are great. ;) Here's on AO3 too, just in case.

And the mess with the bank is officially solved! I even got to do a couple other things while I was at that particular office, so A plus for me. My uterus is singing its song of defeat, but I don't care, I'm too happy and proud of myself. Happy because the mess is sorted, proud because I managed to fix it in three days. When I came home I found a little card from the postman, so I rushed to the post office and got there ten minutes before they closed for lunch, and I was able to retrieve this package:

I actually ordered all this stuff back in March, but it turns out Polish courier services hate my country, or something like that, because this poor package travelled all the way across Europe, and I had to exchange at least twenty emails with the seller, but now, it's finally here. And I can carry all this stuff with me to Verona next monday, at the Mumford & Sons concert. *dance of victory*

A couple of useful links for all my nerd friends. The shop where I bought all the wonderful stuff in the picture is here on Etsy. For fandom shirts, hoodies and stickers, head over to Red Bubble. Orders are shipped from the USA, so they take a month to get to Europe, but they're so worth it.

And now I'm going to have icecream for lunch because I deserve it! \o/

nausicaa83: (<life on mars> the boys and me)
Today sent me all sorts of mixed signals. The morning was splendid. Everything I set out to do went perfectly, and everyone I met was incredibly nice to me. I had all kinds of wonderful conversations with strangers. Then I had some problems at the bank (they changed my account's number), and I had to call four different callcenters, and that got me so nervous I was on the verge of tears. But then everyone who answered was exceptionally nice, and now I have solved almost everything, and only have to visit another office on thurday. Crisis averted, faith in humanity stronger than ever. And I even rescued Sakura who was trying to eat a bumblebee. I scooped her up and rushed her inside before the bumblebee decided to act.

On the way to the bank I walked by a little music store. I checked the windows, and they had Harvest by Neil Young. It was my dad's favourite album, and I already had it (both tape and cd), but I suddenly remembered all the times he told me of when he bought the LP, as a teen, and how much he loved listening to it. So I entered and bought it. The clerk put it in a transparent plastic bag, I walked out, and a middle-aged couple saw it, and the man stopped and said, in awe: "Harvest. Neil Young. Congratulations." I stopped on my tracks, smiled and said thanks, a bit surprised. He went on praising the album and my taste in music, and I thanked him again, and we talked about how the classics stay in our hearts, and that even if cds have the best sound, vynil records have an inimitable nostalgia factor.

Today shall be remembered as the day corporations tried their best to piss me off, while strangers made my day so much brighter.

It was also the day my Art of the Avengers artbook finally arrived, which made me squee and do a dance around the living room to Heart of Gold, while Sakura silently judged me.

She can't understand why I got so excited over that book, while it came in a much more interesting box.

Along with a few Civil War comic books, that are apparently very comfy.

I'll go with the latest book I bought, Professor Moriarty : The Hound of the D'Urbervilles by Kim Newman. It arrived two days ago, I haven't had the chance to read it yet, so here's what Amazon has to say about it:

Imagine the twisted evil twins of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson and you have the dangerous duo of Professor James Moriarty - wily, snake-like, fiercely intelligent, terrifyingly unpredictable - and Colonel Sebastian Basher Moran - violent, politically incorrect, debauched. Together they run London crime, owning police and criminals alike. When a certain Irene Adler turns up on their doorstep with a proposition, neither man is able to resist. An entertaining and wickedly humorous crime adventure from the bestselling writer of Anno Dracula.

Sounds so fascinating! *____*

On the fanfic front, my favourite Avengers fic, and one of the best I have ever read, In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury) by scifigrl47. It has everything, humour, romance, drama, great character development, an eye for the comics while keeping the movie characterizations flawless, it is definitely an A+.

nausicaa83: (<sherlock> being silly)
As I spent the last half hour scrolling down this site and laughing so much I almost peed myself, I feel like it's my duty to share it with my f-list:

Bad Romances

It's a collection of horrible, unintentionally hilarious romance book covers. From the titles, to the awful photoshop skills, from the spirit animals photobombing the sex scenes to the objectified scotsmen, from the lurky threesome guys to the improbable anatomy. And tentacles too. I'm laughing my sides off here. XD

Real life is going fine, mom is having her usual surgery this week (she has one every three months), so I'm carrying my cellphone with me even in the bathroom, just in case. Yesterday the hot, african weather arrived, and I had to turn the air conditioner on, although it's only dehumidifying. I'm feeling a bit ditzy because of my blood pressure, but other than that I'm fine. Sakura's shedding a lot of hair, so we have a grooming session every morning. She loves being brushed, and she always reacts by licking me everywhere. If I start singing to her she relaxes instantly and she stops squirming. Otherwise I end up brushing my own leg, and since the brush is made of tiny metal nails (it's for long-haired cats) and I don't wear trousers in the summer, only shorts, it's kind of an unpleasant situation.

It makes me feel a lot like a snake charmer. :D

Great news! On tuesday I'm going to visit my aunt! It's almost eight hours by train, but so worth it. The next door neighbours will take care of Sakura, and I'll have three well-deserved days of family time. Yes! I can't wait! I'm so excited I'm only using exclamation marks! I can't help it!

I also have a couple of links I forgot to share here:

- an epic Sherlock/X-Files video // the ancient name for the devil. Never thought they could work so perfectly together. Stunning work, and that part of me who was a huge X-Files fan, almost 15 years ago, is absolutely ecstatic.

- a new Simon's Cat episode!

- Writing On Water // Water first, fountain pen ink after. Beautiful.

Hope you enjoy them, I'll go back to filling my iPod with nine hours worth of music. ^^

News and links, for I'm stuck here for another couple of hours and I'm bored. :D

The biggest Sherlock community, [livejournal.com profile] sherlockbbc is on hiatus. The community in itself was great, the users are amazing, and I met so many friends there, but I wasn't the only one who had a problem with the mods' administration, and now they decided to shut everything down for a while. So, for anyone who needs them, here's a bunch of helpful links for all your fandom needs. ^^

My personal recs would be my Bookmark Page on AO3, obviously.

And my Tumblr is here, just in case. I think Tumblr isn't a proper instrument for a fandom: it's great to share links and recs, but you can't properly comment and discuss with other users, at least not without spamming everyone, and I'm convinced that should be the core of it. But yes, if you're looking for links and recs, that is definitely the place now.

I'm trying to follow everyone from my f-list on AO3 and tumblr too, but in case I somehow missed you, drop me a line with a link here. ♥

----

On real life news, nothing much happening, but for Sakura still taking her syrup, and me crossing all fingers that it works because if I have to carry her another time to the vet during the next week she'll just pack her bags and leave. Definitely.

And Game of Thrones keeps getting better and better with every new episode, while making me cry for minor characters I didn't even notice I loved so much until now.

Tomorrow I'm going to visit a couple of friends I haven't seen in months, I'm so happy! We have so many things to talk about, and I missed them a lot! *___________*
