nausicaa83: (<kingdom hearts> start a new journey)
Last entry before departure: I got my tickets, I got my passport, I got my suitcase. Hope I didn't forget anything important. I got a make-up bag full of medicines because I get super anxious everytime I have to leave the country. I'll take pictures on my phone because that camera is way better than the actual camera I bought in 2012.

The last few days were spent taking long walks downtown to build up my stamina, marathoning all the X-Men movies (except for the ones Days of Future Past made irrelevant, because those two suck anyway), going to the cinema to watch Beauty and the Beast, which I loved. Today we're going to visit Tati's sister and her baby, and then I hope I'll be able to sleep, because I'm always anxious the night before I have to take a plane.

See you on the other side! \o/

Hi everyone, sorry for the lack of news. I came back on friday, but because I had a cold I experienced some devastating ear pain on landing and ended up deaf in my left ear for two days. The lovely [livejournal.com profile] space_oddity_75 is taking care of me and I'm feeling a lot better. I'll be back home tomorrow and I'll post pictures soon. ^^

Another short update on my phone, tomorrow is our last day in London. Today we went to Westminster Abbey and St Paul's. I even sang 'Feed the Birds' on the steps there, it was magical. I took 304 photos so far. My arm looks better, but it's still itchy. Next entry will be from not-so-sunny Italy. *-*

Writing on my cellphone in the hotel's hall, so forgive any mistakes. Journey going great, the sun burns hot, my pale skin couldn't stand a chance! I'm taking lots of pictures, relaxing, having a wonderful time. And queuing everywhere. :D

Sorry for disappearing all week, but I was really busy planning the trip ahead. Today all I have left to do is packing, and my hands smell funny from pouring shampoo and conditioner in tiny bottles. :D I'm also charging everything, double-checking everything, and having the usual mini freak-out. What if I forget something vital, etc.

Tomorrow we finally leave for London! If everything goes the way it should, we should reach the hotel by 4 pm. I'll post little updates here, and a lot of pictures when I come back. I'm counting on all of you for fandom updates. ;)
nausicaa83: (<life on mars> just got here)
This morning I finally got rid of the stupid stitches. They said everything's looking good, and that I can go back to eating normal food in a couple of days. Normal, hot food. I'm so happy I could cry. I still have a final check-up next week, and have to keep disinfecting my gums with a cream that tastes like plastic, but hey, one step closer to freedom!

Yesterday I finally booked plane tickets and a hotel for a trip in July I'd been planning for a couple of months, but that almost didn't happen because of the stupid teeth. Now that that's out of the way, the trip is back on: I'm taking my aunt to London! She first asked me back in Rome, because she's never been there and she loved all my stories about it. It'll be seven days of shameless tourist stuff, I want to take her everywhere, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, the Globe, fish and chips in a pub, everything. It's going to be awesome.

Right now, though, what with the stitches, first day of my period, and huge responsability in planning a whole trip for someone special, my brain kinda shut down on itself, and I feel incredibly exhausted. Plus this whole week without tea has proved that I'm kinda addicted to that small daily dose of caffeine. And no therapy this week, so that didn't help.

Third and final part here!

We're busy doin' nothin'/Workin' the whole day through/Tryin' to find lots of things not to do )

No cut here because it deserves to be seen by everyone. Behold! The ultimate Cabin Pressure picture! Bonus points if you read it very fast like a caption (Jelly Babies to manual/Talisker-Talisker/Toblerone, I could get him a Toblerone/Attention, mes amis, regardez-vous le bear polar!).

...and now Talisker instructions! )

In conclusion, fantastic journey, superb company, fantastic food, 10/10. ♥
nausicaa83: (<cabin pressure> hey chief)
And we're back with the second part! The last time we saw our heroes we had just spent the whole of saturday strolling around the city, shopping and eating (so much eating). The evening approached, and our two heroines reach the Globe, where a certain tempest is approaching...

And keep the crickets cheerful/They're really a solemn bunch/Hustle, bustle/And only an hour for lunch )

Third and final part here.
nausicaa83: (<life on mars> just got here)
I'm eating shortbread, drinking kiwi juice, and regretting living inside a witch's cauldron. Time to stop complaining about the weather and getting started on my London post!

The lovely [livejournal.com profile] space_oddity_75 and I are huge Cabin Pressure fans, and when last December we read that Roger Allam was going to be Prospero in The Tempest we decided to book a trip to London to see him. First on saturday evening, then the matinée on sunday. Then she found out John Simm was going to be in The Hothouse that same weekend and we bought tickets to that too. It was a fantastic weekend of fine theatre with two of our favourite actors. \o/ I took a lot of pictures, so this post will be divided in three parts. I'm not even sorry.

I have to watch the river/To see that it doesn't stop/And stick around the rosebuds/So they'll know when to pop. )

Onward to the second part.
nausicaa83: (<007> at the pool)

Yes, I'm back from London. And on the way to ending up like the Wicked Witch of the West in the middle of the living room, it's so unbelievably hot and humid here I just can't stand it. Coherent post and pictures (lots of pictures) to follow. ;)
nausicaa83: (<colbert report> kermit arms)
I'm ashamed to realize I still haven't done an official entry for my next trip. Drumroll, please.

On June 14th I'm leaving for London, in the company of the lovely [livejournal.com profile] space_oddity_75. We'll be enjoying a weekend of fine theatre, three performances in three days. It's going to be awesome. First, on friday, we'll be at Trafalgar Studios for The Hothouse with John Simm. John Simm. In a theatre. I will never be prepared enough. I'll probably hyperventilate the whole evening.

On saturday and on sunday we'll be at the Globe for The Tempest with Roger Allam as Prospero, the reason why we decided to organize this trip. We're going to be in Shakespeare's theatre, watching Roger Freaking Allam in one of my favourite Shakespeare plays. This is not only a dream come true (Roger Allam in a theatre), but a childhood dream (a Shakespeare play in a theatre) inside another childhood dream (a play in the Globe), it's an Inception of my wildest and oldest dreams.

And yes, we're going both on saturday evening and for the matinée on sunday. Roger Allam. Prospero. My brain short-circuits everytime I think about it.

It's going to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and it's all thanks to you, [livejournal.com profile] space_oddity_75! I will never be able to thank you enough, dear! You probably already own my soul, just so we're clear.
nausicaa83: (<sherlock> london calling)
Thanks to the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] space_oddity_75 for linking me to this breathtaking video (in colour!) of London in 1927:

This footage was shot in 1927 and shows the old trams, open top buses and how policemen guided traffic in Hyde Park, Westminster, London Bridge and the approach to Trafalgar Square.

As an archaelogist, I'm weeping in joy at the incredible quality of the footage, that allows us to see so many wonderful details. As someone who loves London, I feel like a time-traveller, and I'm sitting here giggling and sniffing. And look at the clothes, the hats, the children, the cabs, I'm speechless.
nausicaa83: (<sherlock> password)
Yay, spring! Yyyyyaaaaaayyyyyy! I still can't believe it's finally spring. Such warm, fantastic weather. I still have a few things to do today, but after that nothing will stop me from enjoying a lovely walk in the sun, oh yeah.

We have a new member of my growing teddy bear collection, and it's a special one indeed.

Story time! Exactly one year ago I went to London with Tati. It was a wonderful trip, mostly about all things Sherlock Holmes. In the SH museum's shop they had this exact bear, but it was not on sale. Turns out, it's from the Great British Teddy Bear Company, and they are on ebay too. As you can see, it comes with a pipe and a real magnifying glass. The plan was to put it on my Sherlock Holmes shelf, but it's so soft and cute, I'm going to put it next to Captain Martin Crieff instead, where I can hug them whenever I want to! *____* Yes, I give my teddy bears Cabin Pressure names. Snoopadoop Noblest of Bears sleeps in my bed, for your information. ;)

In family news, my aunt came back from a week in Prague with her students (she's a high school teacher), and she's absolutely in love with that city. She promised she'll take me there soon, just the two of us. I melted in a poodle of happy goo just at the thought. ♥
nausicaa83: (<the hour> cooking hour)
After the dolce turco the other day, I felt confident enough to try my hand at something a bit harder, and more foreign. I had a recipe for scones sitting in my bookmarks, and after trying them in London last spring I've often dreamed of preparing them myself. There were a couple of bumps on the road: it was my first time making buttermilk, and I didn't have appropriate biscuit cutters. I could use a champagne flute, but they're very thin and fragile, so I decided to go for my poker biscuit cutters instead. After all, it was a first attempt, meant only for me. When I mention poker I mean they're made like the four suits in cards, and they're older than me. :D

Here's the final result, straight out of the oven. The shapes look a lot better than I thought, go me! We could call them Casino Royale Scones. :D The smell is amazing, but I haven't tried them yet because they're too hot, and I already almost burned my arm while taking them out of the oven. ^^"

The recipe I used can be found here, with a link to a recipe for buttermilk too. Between making the buttermilk and taking the scones out of the oven, they took no more than one hour to make. Easy peasy.

I'm really loving this new hobby. And it takes my mind off the General Election tomorrow, definitely a plus, since everytime I think about that I get a stomachache.
nausicaa83: (<supernatural> let's jam)
Oh man, the new update page is live. It's so huge and bright and ugly. It's going to take me days to get used to it. Or some kind soul from Stylish will save us first. Right now I'm using the "LiveJournal Dark" thing, it turns the background dark and the font white, so I can write without squinting one eye and turning my face away from the screen. ^^"

First, I have huge news. The amazing, fantastic, utterly brilliant [livejournal.com profile] space_oddity_75 booked us tickets for The Tempest at the Globe in June. The one with Roger Allam as Prospero. I'm going to see a Shakespeare play, in Shakespeare's theatre, with Roger Allam playing the main character. In June. We'll watch it twice, once saturday and then the matinee on sunday, because we're crazy like that. :D

*insert happy dance*

Then, Supernatural entry, for Trial and Error! I loved this episode so freaking much. I got teary-eyed at the first scene, I wanted to hug Kevin like crazy, and the character development at the end made me end up crying. And all the homages to the third season, and Ellie, and the burgers, and the glasses, and Sam's speech, jlsfdhaghfldghkjghf. I'm finally getting used to the fact that with this season every new episode is a plot episode, and there are no more fillers. It was a weird (fantastic) feeling at the beginning, but now I'm getting used to it. *______*
nausicaa83: (<007> for your eyes only)
Yesterday I went to the dentist. I stayed there three hours in total, had two teeth re-done from scratch, more or less, and even if everyone was incredibly nice, it was still a bad experience. The left side of my face kept hurting until late last night, even with painkillers, and today it still hurts when I eat. At least today I'm able to talk again. Yesterday I couldn't even carry a simple conversation on the phone without flinching every two words, and I couldn't even call [livejournal.com profile] space_oddity_75 to fangirl over Uskerty! Unacceptable! (When I'm pain I turn into the Earl of Lemongrab, apparently)

Being cut off from the rest of humanity at least allowed me to spend the time I usually spend socializing finishing the second season of Luther. Way better than the first one, I loved it. More character development, less gruesome but ultimately boring cases, that's the way it should be. And it made me long for London so much it felt like my heart was bursting out of my chest. I love that city, obviously, and I love watching movies and tv shows set in it, but I'd never felt so desperately, painfully nostalgic, like someone was squeezing my lungs. I'm blaming the medications, yes yes. I'm a tough, cynical person, that's me.

Speaking of, a picture of Sakura sleeping on the couch. I would like to point out that she's sleeping half off the edge of the couch. I took the picture then grabbed her before she could fall, and she didn't appreciate it at all. So I got her box (she loves that box) and put it on the couch, and now she has her personal, safe-proofed paper bed she can't fall off. I'm very proud of myself.

My aunt is not going to like it at all, but since boxes are by definition kitty magnets now I always know where she is: not falling off the couch. ;)

Ok, now painkillers, cup of tea and a nap. Stupid teeth.
nausicaa83: (<once upon a time> saviour)
Bad news of the day: I hurt my left toe. I had to fix it up on the sink, with Sakura fussing over, and blood makes everything slippery! There was much cursing, but it looks like it's fixed now. Obviously it has to happen the day before I leave for Milan, where there'll be much walking around, what with the bus and subway strike. Curses.

And now on to the (many) good news. First, there's me leaving for Milan tomorrow, to see Frankenstein! Yes! I can't wait! I only have to print the maps left and I'm ready. Both the hotel and the cinema are close to the railway station, so there's that.

Then there's the Once Upon A Time premiere, and it was amazing! So many things happening, lots of squeeing involved, and this new storyline looks even better than the last. I love all the new characters, they opened with a Lou Reed song, and they even did a little homage to Harry Potter. I want to hug them all!

Today was also the day of much deliciousness arriving by mail. My order on the Fortnum & Mason website arrived four days earlier:

I re-stocked mine and Tati's British teas, the ones we bought in London when we had that wonderful afternoon tea at Piccadilly. And since I was there, I bought some orange and ginger biscuits, and a jar of sweets I had never heard of before, called Black Jacks. God, I love trying new things. *_______*

And the rest of the Teen Wolf teas arrived, ten days early! Now my tea cabinet is exploding, and since it's 50 cups of tea each, I'm covered until late 2014. I must avoid new fandoms at all cost, or I'll fall into temptation, order new teas and I literally don't have the room. XD Yesterday I tried the Derek one, and it was GREAT. A peculiar taste, it made me think of... woods, and fog, and then there was the aconite taste, it was great and all the while it needs time to be fully understood. I have no idea how that woman manages to make these blends that taste great and at the same time describe the character in question perfectly. :D

Then, there's the new Green Day album, which I fell in love with at once. I first knew them with their concept albums, so it was weird to have new songs that remind me of the old ones, but in a good way. I'm especially in love with Carpe Diem and Oh Love, I keep finding myself humming them. *_____*

And of course, I saved the best for last, with the new Mumford & Sons album. It was well worth the wait, it's absolutely amazing. I keep changing my mind about my favourite song, at the moment it's a death match between Lover's Eyes (which is my Derek Hale number one song) and Not With Haste, but they're all so beautiful my heart can't choose.

The next entry is going to be in two days when I come back. Or tomorrow, if I get bored and my phone has good reception. See you on the flip side of the safety demonstration. Ciao!

A bit late, I know, but here's a picture of my nails! I asked Martina for something British since I was leaving in a couple of days for London, and she came up with this:

I love it. :D

Today I finally gave up and bought a Kindle. Summer is coming, and Tati's moving to a nearby town for her job, and I'm going to visit her every other day, and I need something to help me carry my favourite fanfics with me. Yes, it was meant for e-books, but I'm going to use it mainly for fanfics. I do love AO3 and their download options. ♥

And I forgot to write this in the big ass London post, but I did in fact listen to Cabin Pressure on the plane. On both planes, actually, and the experience was absolutely... brilliant! Mostly because the Captain kept calling the Cabin Crew on the Intercom in the background. :D

Also, new layout and text for the comments! It took me a while to come up with a nice option for that, and I'm so proud of myself. :D
