Remember last year, and two years ago, when I did those Reading Challenges? I had to interrupt the 2015 one for obvious reasons, but I've been doing a 2016 one, although I've never mentioned it here before. Sorry about that. ^^" So here's a summary of what I've been reading so far, in chronological order (all hail the mighty Kindle, that weighs nothing, I can carry everywhere, and stores thousands of books at the same time!):

The Kane Chronicles novels, by Rick Riordan. From the author of Percy Jackson and Magnus Chase, a similar story but with Egyptian Gods and a non-white cast. I loved these books, but regrettably not as much as the other two series, which is a shame because I really wanted to love them more.

The Raven Cycle tetralogy by Maggie Stiefvater. I read them because everyone on tumblr was talking about them and I got curious. They are objectively good, and they have a bisexual kid and a gay kid in a relationship among the main cast, and it's a major plot point, so major kudos for that. My one problem is that the writing left me very cold, and I felt I couldn't relate to the characters at all. It was beautiful writing, but very impersonal. I'm not going to re-read them, but I definitely enjoyed them.

Then I got that terrible infection, got hospitalized for ten days, and I re-read all the Percy Jackson books on my phone. I'm a fast reader and one gets bored quickly in a hospital. Plus I had no roommate because of the infection. Fun times.

When I finally got better and went back home I started reading A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle, because they had just announced the movie and I wanted to see what it was about. It took me something like a hundred pages to realize I had already read it as a kid. And it was one of my favourite books too! I... I have no excuses. I read the second book and got halfway through the third one before giving up. I still think the first one is really beautiful, but then it gets too religious for my tastes, and way too boring, with some weird pacing issues.

Then I read Gone Girl without knowing anything about it, and I finished it in a day because it was so intriguing and I just couldn't wait to see what was coming next. I did not see the ending coming, at all. And I have to say I agree with some of the accusations of misogyny this book has recieved. While I agree with the author that we need more female villains in literature, because female characters are usually trapped in nurturing roles as that's what's expected of a woman in our society, what she did in this book was to create a female villain whose evil nature is inherently linked to her sexuality. She makes false rape accusations, gets pregnant to trap her husband, everything she does as a villain is because of her being a woman. She's not a villain who also happens to be a woman, the unicorn we readers would like to see more, she's the Psycho Bitch meninists keep rambling about. So yeah, it's a fascinating thriller and the writing is really good, but it's very misogynistic, no way around it.

It's been kind of a disappointing year for me when it comes to new novels. Right now I'm reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, and so far I'm enjoying it, so maybe the tide is turning. ^^
nausicaa83: (<hot fuzz> true love)
Just like I hoped, my birthday has been a turning point for me. I tend to fixate on dates and anniversaries, even too much, but sometimes that obsession does help. I feel like my birthday ended the awful year of illness and pain, and now I've started a new year of healing. I know it sounds a bit weird and new-ageish, but you know what I mean. I've spent a great week at home, I've made some wonderful new friends (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] capracotta, who is amazing), I've been to the bank and the restaurant and I've done laundry and everything feels normal and new at the same time. I feel like I'm taking control of my life once again, a life that includes monthly trips to the hospital, but also hanging out with my friends, going to the cinema, making marmalade with my aunt. I can do it. ^^

And in this spirit, here's an old meme because I need to start posting regularly here again, instead of only when I got news about chemo. New leaf.

And now, some fandom news! I finally watched that new Shane Black movie, The Nice Guys, and I loved it. It was funny as hell, the mystery was intriguing and had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure it out first, and Ryan Gosling and Russel Crowe have excellent chemistry. Plus the little girl was amazing, I can't wait to see more of her. I wish Shane Black did more movies, and that they did better at the box office. I think I liked this one even more than Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and that's one of my favourites. Highly recommended.

Brooklyn Nine Nine and Star Vs The Forces Of Evil are back, and they're both still amazing. I know I'm overdoing it with that adjective, but it's true, they're both objectively amazing shows. I still have to watch that new Once Upon A Time episode, mostly because I got derailed by Final Fantasy Type 0: I played it for a month more than a year ago, then stopped just before leaving for the final dungeon. I can't remember why. Then last weekend I finally finished it, witnessed the incredibly depressing ending (even sadder than Crisis Core's, come on!), and now I'm replaying it from start because I'm not ready to let go of these characters. And I love the gameplay. ^^ Also I hurt my shoulder playing drums. Probably the most metal thing I did all year.

So that's it for me today, but I promise to be back tomorrow.

Here I am with another cute meme because I'm waiting for a call from my aunt and I have some time to kill. Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] harriet_yuuko. ♥

Choose five of your favourite (and may I add 'current') fandoms

First character you fell in love with
The character you never expected to love so much
The character you're most like
The character you'd slap
The character you'd sleep with
Your five favourite characters
Your OTP
The pairing you love but isn't your OTP
A pairing you hate
Who's more likely to win the Hunger Games
Who's less likely to win the Hunger Games

Person of Interest, Cabin Pressure, Star Trek (reboot), Supernatural, Avengers (MCU). )

This was fun. :D No call yet, I'll just go and have lunch then. ^^
nausicaa83: (<ashes to ashes> real love)
It's been a quiet couple of days. Cold and rainy weather combined with my period meant I spent most of the day hugging my boule under a blanket, watching Jekyll on my laptop. Watching tv in bed rocks! I also made brownies, because chocolate. And I'm also going through the usual week after I come back from a visit at my family's place, when I miss them so much it physically hurts, so definitely chocolate.

Anyway, to forget the fact that there are tons of things I should be doing (laundry most of all) but I'm bleeding and I'm grumpy, here's a meme I found on tumblr!

"Leave me a character in a comment and I will give you my top 5 favorite moments for them."

C'mon, guys, go nuts! I'm bored and I need an excuse to procrastinate some more. ;)

Anyway, I just finished watching Seven Psychopaths, and I loved it. It's actually easy to spoil a movie like this one, so I won't say anything about the plot, except that if you love talking about action movies it's the movie for you. ;) And it has Christopher Walken being amazing and Tom Waits carrying around a fluffy white rabbit. Plus, it introduced me to this stunning cover of one of my favourite songs from my childhood, from one of the first cds my dad ever bought (it was a Best Of Cat Stevens, in the early 90s). So here's P.P. Arnold, in her rendition of The First Cut Is The Deepest:

Then, because I'm on a roll and I had some brown sugar left from the mince pies, I made muffins! I tweaked the recipe a bit, and added Tardis tea to the dough. It gave them a wonderful aroma, while the brown sugar gave them this amazing colour.

They're very tasty, not too sweet, and they smell great. I ate one with tea, and then had one after dinner with a bit of ham and cheese, and it was superb. I love the contrast between salt and sweet (cheese and pears anyone?). *_________*

And my aunt called me while I was baking, and after I got them out of the oven, and she asked me for details and then to send her the recipe by email. I feel so grown up. :D

Starting with the ebook, there's a great site called Project Gutenberg where you can download hundreds of classic novels, completely free (also legal, which doesn't hurt).

Then, the book. I'm currently reading North & South (by the way, I found the soundtrack of the tv series online, if anyone is interested just tell me and I'll give you a link), Toothiana, Queen of the Fairy Armies (the third Guardians book by William Joyce) and The Hobbit, because I'm physically incapable of reading one book at a time. No wonder sometimes I get the storylines confused. :D Anyway, for this meme I thought it would be nice to post pictures of my first The Hobbit copy. My parents gave it to me when I was six, and my sister and I read it so many times we knew it backwards. It still has notes in my sister's handwriting, and a portrait of Smaug by yours truly in pencil.

Bonus picture, my Tolkien shelf! All the books I own, both in Italian and in English, the artbooks, the soundtracks and the movies. I'm quite proud of this one. ;)

Then, the fanfic! It was so easy to choose, the first place goes to Of Ghosts And Men, by the amazing [livejournal.com profile] stardust_made.

It's a serious crossover between Sherlock and Supernatural, although you don't have to know both to appreciate it. It's wonderful, realistic, and believable, with perfect voices and characterizations. The writing is, in a word, beautiful. Think good wine, jazz music on vynil and a sunny afternoon all rolled into one, that's how beautiful it is. Quite frankly, I would read a ten-page-long shopping list if it were written by her. Except in this case it's a fascinating story that will leave you asking for more at every new chapter.

And let me also add, it's an epic, and as any fan of The Fall will tell you, Epics are great. ;) Here's on AO3 too, just in case.
nausicaa83: (<hobbit> hope)
I managed to drink some tea, eat a few cookies, I'm slowly feeling better. It's been snowing a lot since this morning, and there's a crazily high alert for acqua alta tomorrow in Venice, two events that don't make any sense at all together, but we already knew this winter is batshit crazy. There's some news of the day that I wanted to comment on here, but first, let's proceed with this week's meme:

Sakura has been my shadow all day. She realized something was wrong when I woke her up running to the bathroom at 2 am, so she joined me on the couch and never took her eyes off me since then. She's the mom in our relationship, what can I say. Just before dinner she decided she wanted to go out a bit, and I grabbed my camera and opened the door for her. She took two steps on the freshly fallen snow and jumped back in horror. I took this picture, scooped her up and put her back on the couch. :D

Now, the news of the day! First, pre-production on the third season of Sherlock has officially started, and filming will start in March. I'm definitely too weak to flail my arms and squee like such a piece of news would deserve, but I'm celebrating in my mind. ;)

Then, the ninth season of Supernatural is now official! I wasn't really worried, since they've been doing way better numbers than last year, but it's great to see it confirmed. \o/

Last but definitely not least, the Pope has resigned. Now, I live in the most Catholic country of all, and let me tell you, it is a big deal. He was supposed to die. This is the third time ever, and the first one in 600 years, what the hell. Popes don't resign, popes die. What the double hell. I still have to decide what the best part was: the hundreds of jokes that appeared on my Facebook dash (I follow quite a few Atheistic groups) in less than fifteen minutes, Tati and I reading the announcement online and laughing our asses off every two words, my attempt at a happy dance even when every muscle in my body was hurting. And on mom's birthday too! She would have loved this! *_________*
nausicaa83: (<ni no kuni> lazy afternoon)
I'm finally feeling better. My period struck pretty hard, and I've been losing a lot more blood than usual. That means dizziness, nausea, and occasional headaches. Though it also means a very appreciated diet of eggs and meat and chocolate. Luckly tomorrow it should be over, because I need my blood inside my body, thank you very much.

I watched the new episode of Community, the first one after they fired Dan Harmon. Well, I liked it and I didn't like it. It felt... flat. Like someone was trying to imitate Community, but missing what this show is all about. There were the usual gags and spoofs, but they weren't functional to the story. They ignored much of the character development of the last episodes of the third season, especially with Abed. It felt like it was missing its heart. I'm going to watch the next episodes, but if it keeps being like this I'll just drop it and consider Community a three-season-long show.

And now, a meme!

My most recent love, it's April Smith and the Great Picture Show. The whole Songs for a Sinking Ship album is amazing, here's one of my favourites:

Speaking about Ni No Kuni, I just finished Hamelin, and it's SO GOOD. I literally have to pause it from time to time to squee out loud. It is just like I dreamed, like walking through a Ghibli movie. There was even a monster who was called Porco Grosso (squeeeee), and Marcassin looks just like a teenage Howl, lsdflsdgflkjfhgfhdg!!! ♥

Oh, I do love lazy summer afternoons. I literally have nothing to do today but smile. Well, that, and the laundry, and sorting a couple of bookshelves that make no sense whatsoever. I've also been listening to Cabin Pressure no stop since last thursday. It's been constantly on my iPod when I was out and on iTunes when sitting at the pc. Then back on the iPod while I was levelling Sora and Riku up on my nintendo. There's no specific reason why, I just feel the need to listen to it over and over again. 'Obsessed' is just a word the disorganized use for the focused. Sadly, that's me.

Getting back on topic, if there ever was one, I was tagged on tumblr to do this meme. Except I have no idea who the person who tagged me is, and I do not write anything over there, it seems like a waste of time. I just reblog stuff for a few friends who do not have tumblr accounts, and I stalk my favourite fanfic authors, that's all tumblr is to me. So why not bring the meme over here? Here it is. ^^

Tag! You’re it! The rules are to state 10 random facts about yourself. Then, go to your ten favorite blogs and tell them that they are it!

(I never tag anyone. If you feel like doing it, just go ahead! I'll try and go with ten random personal facts I do not remember sharing on this blog.)

1- I have green eyes. They go from bright green to dark green depending on what I'm wearing at the moment, but other than that they're green. The weird thing is, up until the summer of 2001, I had grey eyes. They could turn blue or dark grey when the light changed. Then, during the summer just before I turned 18, they turned green. It was a stressful period of my life, but I have never heard of anyone else's eyes changing colour because of stress. It was 11 years ago, but sometimes I still think I have grey eyes, and get confused when I read my I.D.
2- When I was a kid I never cried at movies, books or cartoons. I cried in real life, if I was sad or angry, but never at fictional characters, even if I cared for them deeply. With one exception, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. Just a couple of notes of the finale, and I started sobbing my eyes out. Now it's kind of the opposite: I cry at movies, tv shows and books all the time, but very, very rarely in real life.
3- I do not have a favourite colour. It changes every few months. Right now it's blue, anyway.
4- I rarely take naps after lunch, because they leave me ditzy for the rest of the day. I prefer to sleep only at night. But if I do, I always lie down horizontally through the bed, instead of with my head on the pillow, like I should. I started doing that as a kid so that if I woke up suddenly, I would instantly know what time of the day it was. Sort of like a totem from Inception, I guess. ^^
5- I can't see much from my left eye, and the right one is quite near-sighted as well, although not as much. There are various reasons to that, partly genetics, partly an incompetent doctor who delivered me while almost killing me. As a result, I can't see the 3D in movies, or consoles, or anything. It just looks like a plain normal movie, although darker, while the consoles just look blurry. From what my friends tell me, I'm not missing much.
6- I have three tattoos, three dots I got for my radiotherapy, so they're on my chest. I quite hated them until I read this comic strip. Now I actually like them. I'm not getting any other tattoo, though, because my skin is awfully sensitive, and it would hurt like hell. Not worth it.
7- I have an awful memory for faces. Really, really awful. After a few months not seeing a person, I just forget what they look like, and it's very embarassing. I have little to no idea what any of my classmates during the years looked like. And yet, I have a great memory for anedoctes, lyrics, poems, movie scripts, anything I heard. Guess my brain is making up for those lousy eyes with a very excellent hearing.
8- I have no allergies, but the smell of ammonia burns off my sense of smell for two days. Very annoying. I do not have any in my house, obviously, but if I manage to sniff some in public places, toilets, gyms, I run out like a bat out of hell.
9- I'm an alto. I have a quite wide range for an alto, so when I was in a choir, for a few years, I could sing both as a mezzo-soprano and a few baritone parts, to help the guys. It hurts like hell when I sing that low, but it's hilarious.
10- My mom was a doctor, and was very keen on making us all eat healthy. Crazily healthy. I didn't use any condiments up until the age of 21, and I first ate at a fastfood because that day she was out of town and I was feeling reckless. :D When I came back home, I obviously threw up everything (14 years without eating anything fried, my stomach was still virgo intacta), but my dad covered up for me, and she never found out.

Well, that was fun. And it sounds like the washing machine is done, so I can go and get the laundry out. All while listening to Fitton, obviously. I swear, I have no idea what's gotten into me. I even listened to Newcastle and Kuala Lumpur, and those are my least favourite ones!

And the mess with the bank is officially solved! I even got to do a couple other things while I was at that particular office, so A plus for me. My uterus is singing its song of defeat, but I don't care, I'm too happy and proud of myself. Happy because the mess is sorted, proud because I managed to fix it in three days. When I came home I found a little card from the postman, so I rushed to the post office and got there ten minutes before they closed for lunch, and I was able to retrieve this package:

I actually ordered all this stuff back in March, but it turns out Polish courier services hate my country, or something like that, because this poor package travelled all the way across Europe, and I had to exchange at least twenty emails with the seller, but now, it's finally here. And I can carry all this stuff with me to Verona next monday, at the Mumford & Sons concert. *dance of victory*

nausicaa83: (<life on mars> the boys and me)
Today sent me all sorts of mixed signals. The morning was splendid. Everything I set out to do went perfectly, and everyone I met was incredibly nice to me. I had all kinds of wonderful conversations with strangers. Then I had some problems at the bank (they changed my account's number), and I had to call four different callcenters, and that got me so nervous I was on the verge of tears. But then everyone who answered was exceptionally nice, and now I have solved almost everything, and only have to visit another office on thurday. Crisis averted, faith in humanity stronger than ever. And I even rescued Sakura who was trying to eat a bumblebee. I scooped her up and rushed her inside before the bumblebee decided to act.

On the way to the bank I walked by a little music store. I checked the windows, and they had Harvest by Neil Young. It was my dad's favourite album, and I already had it (both tape and cd), but I suddenly remembered all the times he told me of when he bought the LP, as a teen, and how much he loved listening to it. So I entered and bought it. The clerk put it in a transparent plastic bag, I walked out, and a middle-aged couple saw it, and the man stopped and said, in awe: "Harvest. Neil Young. Congratulations." I stopped on my tracks, smiled and said thanks, a bit surprised. He went on praising the album and my taste in music, and I thanked him again, and we talked about how the classics stay in our hearts, and that even if cds have the best sound, vynil records have an inimitable nostalgia factor.

Today shall be remembered as the day corporations tried their best to piss me off, while strangers made my day so much brighter.

It was also the day my Art of the Avengers artbook finally arrived, which made me squee and do a dance around the living room to Heart of Gold, while Sakura silently judged me.

She can't understand why I got so excited over that book, while it came in a much more interesting box.

Along with a few Civil War comic books, that are apparently very comfy.

I'll go with the latest book I bought, Professor Moriarty : The Hound of the D'Urbervilles by Kim Newman. It arrived two days ago, I haven't had the chance to read it yet, so here's what Amazon has to say about it:

Imagine the twisted evil twins of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson and you have the dangerous duo of Professor James Moriarty - wily, snake-like, fiercely intelligent, terrifyingly unpredictable - and Colonel Sebastian Basher Moran - violent, politically incorrect, debauched. Together they run London crime, owning police and criminals alike. When a certain Irene Adler turns up on their doorstep with a proposition, neither man is able to resist. An entertaining and wickedly humorous crime adventure from the bestselling writer of Anno Dracula.

Sounds so fascinating! *____*

On the fanfic front, my favourite Avengers fic, and one of the best I have ever read, In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury) by scifigrl47. It has everything, humour, romance, drama, great character development, an eye for the comics while keeping the movie characterizations flawless, it is definitely an A+.

What a lovely weekend! I spent it at Tati's, and by god I needed it. Long walks on the beach, a Game of Thrones marathon, Chinese takeout for the first time in months, the Legend of Korra finale, and most of all spending hours with my best friend helped me relax so much. What with the weather and some people being assholes it had been a most tiring week.

And this morning I woke up to two of my favourite WIPs being updated, great! First I did my victory dance, and then I had to clean up the terrace because while I was gone there was a twister here and the trees on the street didn't agree with it. There were leaves and brunches everywhere, and firemen trucks too. Now it looks so much better, but it's a weird thing to do first thing in the morning, cleaning after a twister. And then I had icecream for breakfast, because I deserved it. :D

I got lazy and took a picture of what I can see from my desk if I turn my head up and to the left. I know, I know. But it's three fandoms in not even a square foot space, that's something. XD

Sorry for disappearing on you! It's been a tiring week, mostly because of the african weather. It's the worst we've had in 200 years, and for once I'm glad my aunt isn't here because she could never stand it. Walking down the street it feels like someone's holding a damp cloth over one's mouth and nose. My fridge is full of fruit and various kinds of juice, and almond milk, which is a very sicilian thing, and I love it. So sweet and refreshing. And I haven't actually cooked anything since monday, I've only been eating raw meat, salads, fruit salads, sandwiches, and the like. I get a vampire-in-a-sunlight-beam reaction as soon as I get close to the kitchen stove, hissing and wailing of the arms included. With my low blood pressure "ditzy" is what I am every hour of the day.

Sakura is suffering the heat even more than me. She spends the day curled on the marble floor under the air conditioning unit, and I have to physycally remove her and put her on the couch when I think she's had enough. And she sleeps even more than usual, which means she's awake only for two hours everyday.

Let's try and update this journal even during the heat: it's time for my usual meme.

Let's go with Give A Little Bit by Supertramp, as featured in this beautiful CocaCola commercial:

And I'm hitting PMS pretty hard, because this thing made me actually tear up. That and the latest Naruto chapter too. And every other fanfic I've been reading recently. I feel fine, happy even, and yet as soon as I read/watch something even remotely moving, here comes the sobbing. What the hell.

Amazing news on the gaming front, Capcom is releasing Okami in HD this fall. Okami is one of the most beautiful videogames ever made, and one of my personal favourites, and I just bought the artbook. This is the best news ever! ♥

EDIT And I just got some wonderful news, Frankestein is coming to theaters in Italy on September! I still don't know which towns, but I'm most certainly going to see at least one version. Never in a million years I would have thought they would release it here, and I've never been happier to be proven wrong. \o/
