The heatwave is coming, and I'm ready. It isn't here yet, we're having sunny days but with a lovely wind, but I've already bought juice, lots of fruit, mint syrup, I cleaned up the air conditioner filters, I'm basically ready for the summer apocalypse. My aunt is coming on thursday, and she already told me what to make her for dinner when she gets here, and it's all vegetables and cold meat. I'm ready! *grabs a wooden spoon and stares dramatically into the sunset while waves crash all around her*

In fandom news, the final episode of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell aired the other day, and it was bloody amazing. I loved it so much I had to do a happy dance around the sitting room when it was over. Literally. The blu ray should arrive by tomorrow, I can't wait to watch it all over again! I wonder if there'll be extra content. *____*

On the same day they also aired the second episode of this new season of True Detective, but I haven't watched it yet. You probably remember how much I loved the first season last year, and while I was worried Cary Fukunaga wasn't coming back for this one, I was still really excited. And then, the first episode aired, and I hated it. At first I just found it boring and confusing, but the more I thought about it during the week, the more I realized how much I disliked it. So I've decided to just wait until this season is over, ask my friends if it gets better, or if the ending makes it all worth it, and then decide whether to marathon it all, or just drop it. We'll always have the bayou anyway.

Oh, and just a little heads-up: there's a 1080 copy of Mad Max Fury Road floating around online. If you haven't seen it yet, you're missing out on a fantastic movie, believe me!

And now off to lunch with the new episode of Vicious!
nausicaa83: (<strange & norrell> practical magic)
On Monday I had a most wonderful evening: a dear friend invited me to a night at the Opera! At the La Fenice theater, the Opera Theater here in Venice, where I hadn't been in years. The philharmonic orchestra there played pieces by Béla Bartók, Johann Strauss and Leoš Janáček (here's the poster), and it was absolutely magical. The Strauss one was especially loved, and after that the soloist came back on stage and played a wonderful improv with four other musicians, who answered his variations in kind. It was so unexpected and lovely, and funny. Everyone loved it, although we were all really surprised, it was quite unexpected. :D

Here's a picture I took before I had to turn the phone off, the musicians hadn't come out yet. We counted 75 of them, a full orchestra, something very rare indeed! They even had one of them playing the tubular bells! I knew of them, but I had never heard them, and they sound exactly like church bells, to the point that more than once I thought the sound was coming from outside. :D

When we came out it was 10 pm, and we had a lovely walk through the quiet, dark streets: no tourists at that hour, it was almost like it used to be when I was a kid, clean and peaceful. It was the city like it should be, but sadly isn't any more.

Sort of on topic, because Venice plays a huge part in this as well, to those of you who haven't watched Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell yet, you should really, really do it. I can't recommend it enough. At first simply because it was one of my favourite novels, but after a couple of episodes it became clear this show is a beautiful masterpiece in its own right. Everything about it is perfectly crafted, the world feels alive, the magic real, and the acting is superb. Do yourself a favour and check it out, and be ready because it'll blow your mind. *_____*

Remember the Help Nepal charity campaign at [livejournal.com profile] fandomaid I mentioned last month? I bought a fic from the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] stardust_made, and here it is:

The Case Of The Devon Exile - It's Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, from the original stories, in epistolary form. It's lovely and tongue-in-cheek and I adore it! How have I missed these lovely Victorian gentlemen! ♥

In other news, we're two episodes in with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and it is absolutely perfect. It closely resembles the book (there has been a lot of squealing on my part when we first saw Lost Hope), and all the details are incredible, it truly feels like the story came to life. The actors are great, and the special effects are impeccable. The warships, the horses, and even minor things, like Strange's mirror. It's all perfectly woven into the story, to the point that I sometimes forget they are special effects. :D Considering it's a 1000-page-long book they managed to keep the pace brisk without cutting anything important. This series is a delight! *______*

And in other other news Gravity Falls is coming back this July, and we're getting lovely previews from Alex Hirsch on twitter! I'm so happy, I was so sure we would have to wait until late August like last year. ^^

It's such a beautiful day today, sunny and hot, like summer! I'm leaving the house at noon, and that means it's time for a short skirt, and let those milky white legs get some sun! :D My therapist just called me, and she told me it's so hot downtown I should definitely wear sandals. Yesssss.

In other news, here's a random picture I took yesterday for a friend, to show her what happens when I try to read on the couch in the living room:

I'm a guest in my own house. :D

In other-other news, we have a date for the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell premiere: 17/05. That's way earlier than I thought! I truly can't wait, although that means I won't be able to re-read the book before the show starts. Oh well, maybe it's for the best, sometimes reading a book just before watching the tv/movie adaptation ruins the experience.

As you can probably tell, I'm in a exceptional good mood. No particular reason why, I just feel very positive lately. ^^
nausicaa83: (<literature> history)
Quick update because they just released the first trailer for the BBC1 adaptment of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and it looks amazing. A lot better than I hoped, basically perfect. Eddie Marsan as Mr Norrell seems to have jumped out of the pages of the book!

And since there's a "A Book You've Read Before" square on the Reading Bingo, I think I'll use it as an excuse to re-read the novel. I read it back in 2011, and my memories are pretty foggy. It's definitely time to read it again, especially considering I loved it like crazy the first time around. ^^
nausicaa83: (<sherlock> reading)
Just finished Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. It is, hands down, one of the best books I have ever read. It's an historical novel, a tale about magic, a story of a nameless slave and a raven king, it has enchantments, cruel fairies, lost roads, practical magic, potions of madness. It's set in London, Spain, Waterloo, Venice and in Faerie. It tells of friendships and rivalries, of love and hatred, of lost kingdoms, pipers and bells.

Do read it, and be ready to be taken on an incredible, breath-taking journey through all the worlds connected by mirrors.
