Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] su_chan, we have the spoilers for TRC #133. It looks like a really promising chapter, with some answers from Yuuko, at last. And it really makes up for the wait! ^^

Here it's still raining. I'm a bit worried as we had a flooding the last time it rained so long (my birthday weekend, by the way). My house was one the few who didn't have damages back then, but I don't know how long our luck can last.

Yesterday I watched a couple of new movies, The Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy, and Ghostbusters. Yes, I'm the only 80s kid in the whole planet who hadn't never seen it before. But I used to watch the animation show!

...

I liked it a lot, and I got really nostalgic, so let's avoid the cheesy review. The only flaws I could see were the special effects, which were a bit too lame for the period. Contemporary movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? or Neverending Story had way better special effects! O_o Maybe it was a question of money?

L'altro enorme difetto è il doppiaggio italiano. Mamma. mia.

The Guide was so...weird. I started reading the book a couple of years ago, but as it was a e-book it made my eyes burn, so I gave up after the destruction of Earth. I liked the movie, especially the second part, and I thought it was really funny, but I'm sure I have to check the books now.

The effects weren't bad for the period, actually. Ghostbusters was only second to "Temple of Doom" that year, when the mine cart chase was the pinnacle of special effects. Actually, the pinnacle was from the previous year when Lando drove the Falcon through the Death Star. But special effects didn't get back to that level of impressiveness until 1988 with "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and 1989 when they created the water creature from "The Abyss." So between 1984 and 1987, Ghostbusters and Indy topped the techno-side of moviemaking.

Yeah, I'm a special effects nerd.

As for the Guide, I didn't actually care for the movie too much, but that's because I read the book first. About half of everything in the movie doesn't even happen in the book. They were just trying to make it more audience friendly. When writing it, Douglas Adams actually intended for the first and second books to be the complete story (and both could have been made into one movie easily, since the first book is pretty short.) But, yeah, you should give them another try. They're incredibly random, but entertaining nonetheless. I make it a point to read them annually.

Return of the Jedi looks years ahead of this movie, it's weird. O_o

Yeah, well, Return of the Jedi was ahead of everything for years on end until Jurassic Park came around.

Nevertheless, comedies have never had a strong relationship with special effects with very few exceptions (PotC, for example.) When a script has someone laughing, normally the audience won't mind if the FX look a look corny or outdated, because it fits well with the tone of the movie (Stephen Chow movies, for example.)

It scared the crap out of me when I was 11. You keep getting this horrible mental picture of what these things can do to people with those claws. Most movies can't even brush that level of attention. I remember yelling "TURN THE FLASHLIGHT OFF!" in the theatre - and then the T-Rex came through the glass and everyone was screaming!

That thing was big and all it wanted to do was eat. EAT. Dweh!! *shudders*

Well played, Mr. Spielberg. Well played.
