Cinema update! *again!*
Tonight I watched two movies in a row, because... well, I had nothing else to do! Anyway! The first one is Gore Verbinsky's Weather Man. I'm not sure why I exactly decided to see it, as I hate Nicholas Cage. He's my least favourite actor, I simply can't stand him, so I usually try and avoid movies with him. But this one was really interesting: it's that kind of movie with no plot, it's just a few days of some people's life, with lots of inner dialogue, no beginning and no ending. The kind of movie Mom adored (you know, like The Winter Guest), those about the way you feel a story. I know Verbinsky only because of Pirates of the Caribbean, so I was pleased to see he can make such a different, but still good movie. Yes, I liked it. Even if 99% of it is made of close-ups of Cage. It was subtle, and it made you feel like those winter mornings, when you can see your breath. It had a weird sense of humor, which felt so realistic it was almost scary.
The second one is a movie I wish I had seen ten years ago. It's A Chinese Ghost Story, and god, it's a fairytale. There are very few movies that can convey that unique feeling you get reading fairytales books, and mostly they were made in the '80s, like Princess Bride or Neverending Story. I mean, just look at the way Joey Wong moves her robes in the wind to know she's a ghost! It was also interesting to see how Siu-Tung Ching was able to create those incredibly beautiful walks in the trees years before Hero or Crouching Tiger. Leslie Cheung was awesome, such a different character from Kit in A Better Tomorrow, so pure and cute! ^^ I already had the theme song, but hearing it in the movie was so heartbreaking. The monsters were a bit funny to see, I guess animatronics corpses can't scare me anymore, but it felt a bit nostalgic too.
So, a little bonus! The mp3 of Sally Yeh singing Dawn, please don't come, just to share the awesomeness this song is! ^^
