I think they put the "explosion" at night to show us that it's indeed a different future from what it had to be. After all, when Hiro goes to the future and sees the bomb, he also sees different paintings in Isaac's loft, and even the comic book "Hiro In The Future" has a completely different story.
Now I think that by saving the cheerleader they managed to save the world because she convinced Nathan to actually do something to stop the bomb. It doesn't matter if Peter or Sylar have healing powers, as the bomb explodes "by accident". What actually saves the world is Nathan's decision.
Now I'm more confused about Niki's power: I think the problem there is that they're twins, so their powers are probably shared. Maybe the Jessica she sees is just an illusion in her head, and the superstrength was some kind of shared power. Pretty confusing...
