Even if I have a Facebook account, I mostly use it as a gaming platform. So I have a few real life friends, and hundreds of friends from all over the world who share my passion for cooking cute dishes, farming fake vegetables, and fighting Loki and the Enchantress. I post rarely, mostly music videos, and keep the discussions to private messages and the chat. If someone posts something I don't like, I just unfriend them, because if there's one thing I learned in the past ten years is that arguing over the internet doesn't solve a thing. Better to just close the tab and go on with my day.
And yet, with all my zen-like approach, this morning something happened that got me so incredibly pissed that I'm still shaking. Count this as a trigger warning, because holy hell if it was triggering for me. Some of you may remember that my first-grade teacher contacted me on Facebook a couple of months back. She seemed nice, and she mostly reblogged pictures from other pages, so I accepted her friend request and that was all. Until this morning, when she posted (and liked) a picture of some "activists" who were carrying a sign equiparating pig slaughterhouses to Auschwitz. The places where you put pigs, and make bacon out of them. To extermination camps.
Now, it's not the first time someone posts something on Facebook that I find offensive. I got a bunch of guy friends who found sexist memes hilarious. Either I unfriended them, or politely commented why what they just posted was offensive, and that was it. But this one time, it was blind rage, like a shot of venom right into my brain.
Now, before anyone calls me out on this, of course I'm against animal cruelty (even if that picture wasn't even about animal cruelty, just killing pigs). But I'm also a carnivore animal, and I eat meat. I fully respect those who don't, and I love animals (but spiders, hate spiders), but as wolves have claws and fangs, human beings have tools, and use them to get food. That being said, we should do it with the proper respect for the animals, for nature's ability to survive us, and so on so forth.
But this has nothing to do with that. This is the most offensive thing I've seen in ages, and I have no idea how to react to it. I would un-friend her, but I really want her to know why, because it felt like she reached out of the computer and slapped me hard on the face. On the other hand, I don't want to start an argument on Facebook comments, because those are absolutely useless.
I should probably just go and scream in a pillow until I feel a little better. This is one of those rare times I really wish I drank alcohol.
