News from my grandmother! My aunt arrived in Sicily three days ago, and my grandma left the hospital yesterday. At first they wanted to perform surgery, but it was the craziest idea ever. The woman is 87, she could never survive being put under. They quickly changed their minds, and they gave her a huge cast and sent her back home. The first thing she did when she arrived home was fainting - obviously - and my aunt freaked out.
It was so weird, because that's when I realized that even if my aunt is like a mom to me, she isn't my mom. As in, she admitted she had never seen someone fainting before, and she got scared, a reasonable reaction. While for me, growing up with my family I'm used to a lot of things worse than that, so a little fainting? No big deal. It was the weirdest conversation ever, because she was on the verge of tears, and I was all puzzled, saying things like "but she was already on the bed, it's not like she could get hurt, it's normal, you know, they look like they're dead but they're fine" and then it hit me, that people can reach that age never having seen someone faint or having a seizure or worse. Which makes me some kind of... sad snowflake, although it also gives me the ability of calming down people surprisingly fast. Five minutes in, and my aunt was back to normal, and I was giving her directions on what to do next.
So, the cast comes off at the end of May, everyone is fine and my powers of counselling are strong. The bad week is finally over! \o/
