I didn't know she dies in canon. Which story does it happen in?
In canon Watson is married during A Scandal in Bohemia but in the show in the adaption of that story he is not, so they can get him married and not kill her off to suit themselves.
I read an article with Moffat or Gatiss, don't remember who, where they said they might get him married. In 201 John says that they're not a couple and Irene says that they are a couple. Then he says he isn't gay and she says that she is and John doesn't answer. It seems that he kind of understands that he and Sherlock are indeed a couple, whether they are sexually attracted to each other or not. Also Martin said in an interview that their relationship is kind of a love story.
So, it seems that John wouldn't get married because he's already in a relationship, but if he thinks that Sherlock is dead and a long time have passed since his death than he might get married. /: I hope so though that he'll be too attached to Sherlock to get married in the time until Sherlock comes back.
