The books themselves have such a terrific appeal with this imaginative alternate universe and the Borrowers' resourcefulness. Mary Norton came out of the era of the Depression and the War with all that can-do/make-do attitude which people had to acquire. The plucky heroine, Arriety, also helped. There is something that really speaks to children in that.
