nausicaa83: (<007> together at skyfall)
During the last few weeks, since I bought the new tv, I've been slowly going through my blu-ray collection, to appreciate all my favourite movies all over again, this time in high quality. That mostly meant an animated movie every night, but today I decided to go for something different. I chose one of my favourite movies, but that I hadn't seen in years. Probably since I graduated. I'm talking of Brian De Palma's The Untouchables. I first came across this masterpiece when I was 19, browsing through some old vhs tapes in our old house. Watching it for the first time was equal parts like falling in love and being hit by lightning. Everything I love about cinema can in some way be traced back to that movie. I asked my mom about it, and she told me it was one of dad's favourite movies, and that there were times when he watched it every night after work. My dad died when I was 15, but that was the first time I realized there was a huge chunk of his life that I had completely missed. And everytime I watch this movie, even if it never happened I can imagine him so clearly sitting next to me, cheering and gasping and tearing up at all the same places.

My love for cinema, my love for archaeology, for astronomy and for cooking, they all come from my dad. And there are so many movies we watched together thousands of times. But this one, because I found it by accident, on my own, is the one that makes me feel like the link isn't completely broken, that there were things, years later, that I could still share with him. And that's why I cherish this movie so much.
