Ok, I think I got it. Could it be they decided to call it "Six Short Stories"? It starts with "Cupid and the paint-brush".
I actually have something very similar in my experience too. I first read Three Men In A Boat by Jerome K. Jerome when I was a kid, and it's still the funniest book I've ever read. I've read it countless times, it's the first book I bought in its original language (Penguin edition, back in high school), and it's losing pages everywhere. I love it so much I can quote every chapter, and it still makes me laugh just by thinking about it. :D
