What is a ghost?
A tragedy condemned to repeat itself time and time again? An instant of pain, perhaps. Something dead which still seems to be alive. An emotion suspended in time. Like a blurred photograph. Like an insect trapped in amber.
As you can see, I just watched El Espinazo Del Diablo (The Devil's Backbone), as Guillermo del Toro said Pan's Labyrinth is a sequel in spirit to this one. Now I'm scared to death, but I'm really glad I could watch such a beautiful movie. The acting is superb (and 90% of the cast is made of kids), the cinematography, with its wide range of browns, is awesome, and the ghost scared the hell out of me. I'm not sure you can call it an horror movie though, even if it has all the elements to be an horror. It's more a... psychological thriller with fantasy elements. After all, the living are far more dangerous than the dead.
And now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go turn on every light in the house. ;)
