Yeah, well, Return of the Jedi was ahead of everything for years on end until Jurassic Park came around.

Nevertheless, comedies have never had a strong relationship with special effects with very few exceptions (PotC, for example.) When a script has someone laughing, normally the audience won't mind if the FX look a look corny or outdated, because it fits well with the tone of the movie (Stephen Chow movies, for example.)
